An evolution of the 78 rpm record, vinyl is at the center of a revival that passes, inevitably, through the domestic space. The return of the record player, then, has proven not only a phenomenon of music and customs, but also a matter of design. Having witnessed the success of analog sound, furniture companies are now trying their hand at original pieces designed to accommodate the trend once more within the four walls of home. Somewhere between bookcases, shelves and sideboards, new models create displays that showcase or conceal whenever needed. With your favorite records on view, the multi-functionality of design embraces the needs of collectibles as well, imagining spaces dedicated to showcasing your most valuable vinyls. Leading the way in the next generation of vinyl storage, then, our head to head challenge of the week highlights color: while Danish brand Montana Furniture focuses on the simplicity of its design, USM x Symbol explores the flexibility of one of its most popular systems, encompassing various types of audio equipment.
“We at Symbol have long admired USM, not only for their incredible products, but also for their clear vision of the world of furniture. The opportunity to work with their legendary catalog of components was an incredible opportunity that we enjoyed from start to finish.” With this, Walker Tovin, Symbol’s brand director, comments on the special collaboration with the Swiss company specializing in office furniture. The collaboration has resulted in four systems that take advantage of the brand’s signature modularity to match audio storage needs with the shapes and aesthetics of home furniture. From cabinets to record holders, including slots for speakers and other sound devices, the collection brings together open compartments, tilting drawers, displays and sliding bookends. An integrated lighting system can also be added upon request.
Available in the 41 colors on catalog, Montana Furniture’s new Spin is a collection of shelves for storing vinyl records that alternates simple geometries and spacing to store records in an orderly fashion. Designed around three distinct layouts, it adapts flexibly to any needs, leaving space on top for the record player itself. “A subtle but crucial detail,” as the Danish company’s design description states, “is the inclusion of cable loops within the structure that gives the possibility to immerse yourself in a tangible sound experience without the annoying tangling of cables.” With improved and optimized storage space, Spin is designed both on wheels and on a fixed base.
