Think motion furniture is all about oversized recliners? Prepare to be impressed by how style and technology are evolving.

“In years past, you only ever really saw big, poofy, kind of chunky motion furniture with an option for power foot reclining,” said Haylee Voigt, design consultant at Montgomery’s.

“And now, we’re seeing so much change, much more extensive usable features and more style options.”

One evolving furniture category is called “motionary” – think pieces of furniture that appear stationary but offer reclining features such as power foot or sliding chaises.

“We’re seeing it in sectionals, sofas and chairs,” Voigt said. “It opens up a lot of design opportunities in addition to furniture that can help you more effectively relax.”

You don’t need to place this furniture near outlets, either. Montgomery’s offers battery packs to power your pieces so you aren’t limited to walls. This can open up additional room layout options.

“Like other electronics, battery life varies depending on how much you use it but can last up to 450 cycles,” Voigt said.

Here’s a look at some of the features in these and other motion-focused pieces.

Power head, lumbar

It’s not just about reclining your feet anymore – motion furniture now incorporates power headrest and lumbar options.

“We see people come in with back issues and really enjoy that feature,” Voigt said. “It’s recommended to elevate your feet daily to improve circulation as well, and this makes it easy.”

Heat, massage, coolers

Motion furniture increasingly offers options that will deliver heat and massage, further enhancing comfort or even a therapeutic effect.

And it doesn’t stop with heat — “we even have one love seat with an actual cooler built into it,” Voigt said.

Surround sound

You’ll feel part of the game or the movie in some of the latest motion furniture that incorporates speakers right into the piece.

“It’s not just furniture — it’s a front-row seat to the action. Some of the newest motion sofas are equipped with powerful, immersive speakers that sync directly with your TV, surrounding you with theater-like sound. You don’t just hear it — you feel it,” Voigt said.

“The sound pulses through the seat with subtle vibrations, pulling you deeper into every explosion or musical moment. It transforms your living room into a full sensory experience. And with built-in charging ports, everything you need is right at your fingertips.”

Bedroom tech

Motion furniture also appears in bed frames, with options that allow for adjustable postures, including zero gravity, as well as a feature that incorporates massage.

“I’ve seen quite a few people gravitate toward the adjustable frames,” Voigt said. “And we also have an option to add lights under the frame to create a night-light effect. I won’t be surprised to see more motion technology emerge in bedroom furniture too.”

Satisfaction guaranteed

Montgomery’s hand-selects its motion furniture to emphasize quality and durability.

Every vendor offers different warranties, but Montgomery’s also offers a five-year protection policy that covers a variety of potential issues, including:

  • Breakage of frame.
  • Breakage of recliner, lifting, heating/vibrating mechanisms.
  • Failure of integral electrical components.

“Plus, if you don’t use it in five years, you’ll get half back in the form of store credit,” Voigt said.
